What is vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy is the thinning, inflammation, lost elasticity, or dryness in the vaginal walls. The dip in estrogen levels during menopause, following oophorectomy, after cancer treatment, or from aging contribute to vaginal changes. Vaginal atrophy can cause:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Painful intercourse
  • Vaginal dryness

How does the MonaLisa Touch help with vaginal atrophy?

The MonaLisa Touch works by directing specially-calibrated lasers at the vaginal walls. These lasers increase blood flow to the area, stimulating collagen production and tissue regeneration. Collagen helps restore tissue elasticity and enhance lubrication. The process also helps restore optimal vaginal pH levels.

What is the MonaLisa Touch procedure like?

During this quick five-minute in-office procedure, Dr. Willen uses a special laser wand to enhance vaginal function. You get to rest comfortably on the exam table with your legs in stirrups.

Dr. Willen then inserts the laser wand into your vagina and maneuvers it, directing the laser pulses at the vaginal walls. He maneuvers the probe down the length of the vagina one centimeter at a time.

The non-invasive, painless procedure requires no anesthesia, but some women notice a slight tingling sensation from the lasers.

What happens after the vaginal rejuvenation?

The MonaLisa Touch procedure doesn’t require any recovery time so that you can return to your regular activities. You may experience some brief, minor swelling or discomfort after the procedure, but you should feel fully restored within a day or two.

You won’t be able to have sex, take hot baths, or exercise for up to five days afterward. It takes about a month to notice changes, at which time you should recognize enhanced lubrication and tightness.

Dr. Willen may recommend up to two more procedures, spaced about six weeks apart for optimal results. Then, you can schedule treatments once every year after that for maintenance.
