Sexual Dysfunction Q & A
What is sexual dysfunction?
Any physical or psychological factor that interferes with your sexual satisfaction and disrupts your relationship with your partner is considered sexual dysfunction. Problems with sexual function include:
- Pain during intercourse
- Lack of arousal
- Trouble reaching orgasm
- Sexual dissatisfaction
- Low libido
What causes female sexual dysfunction?
Sexual satisfaction often requires a delicate balance of emotional, physical, behavioral, experiential, and psychological factors. An imbalance in any one of these factors can disrupt the entire activity. Sexual dysfunction can be attributed to numerous causes:
Physical
The most notable physical cause for dysfunction is pain. Vaginal atrophy and the dryness, thinning, and inflammation that go along with it can cause pain during sex.
Low libido is another physical manifestation of sexual dysfunction. Certain medications, mental conditions, and life stressors can make you averse or apathetic to sex. Diagnosis of a major illness, such as cancer or diabetes, can also lower your sex drive.
Hormonal
Hormone disruption during menstruation and menopause or after childbirth can contribute to vaginal dryness and low libido.
Psychological
Depression, anxiety, abuse, and major life changes can cause you to lose interest in sex. Deeply ingrained religious or cultural beliefs may also interfere with your sex drive. Worries about pregnancy during sex and relationship troubles can also make the deed less pleasurable.
What can I do about it?
You can start by talking to Dr. Willen, whether you suspect your dysfunction is due to a medical issue or not.
If the issue is medical, Dr. Willen can help pinpoint the cause and treat it. If you worry about pregnancy, he can discuss birth control methods with you. Hormonal imbalance can contribute to loss of sex drive and there are several steps that can be taken to correct your particular problem. Some women find the addition of testosterone, a male hormone, aids in returning their sex drive. We have a compounding pharmacy in Reno that can make this hormone available to you.
Even though sexual dysfunction seems like an off-limits subject to some, Dr. Willen can help you troubleshoot and make adjustments until you find satisfaction again.
If you’re ready to enjoy sex again, give Tahoe Women’s Care a call or book an appointment online.
